Captain’s & First Officer’s Log: 20-15-07-07

FO: We’re safely ensconced at the Benton KOA in Benton, Illin-oys which for some reason is pronounced Illin-oye, and we are impaled on the horns of a dilemma. We have 502 miles left to drive to Ashville, NC. Should we do two full days at 250 miles each and arrive in Ashville three days early or do three days easy-cruising and arrive there one day early?

This post is just a quick “Hi There” to let you know we’re okay. We’ll do some research and let you know what we decide.

BTW: Yesterday our breakfast-at-a-rest-stop routine got knocked off kilter by the simple fact that for the most part, secondary highways don’t have rest stops. Although highways 24 and 61 in Missouri are beautiful highways, four lanes divided and smooth as glass, there was not a rest stop to be found until we got all the way to and through St. Louis, whereupon, we found one on Interstate 64. By this time the Captain was gnawing hungrily on a table leg and the FO was looking at the dogs in a whole new light.

The FO quickly made the Captain a grilled ham and cheese sandwich (grill the ham, place the ham and two slices of Monster cheese (which for some reason is spelled Muenster) on white bread, which has just a ghost of mustard on each inside face, then grill the whole sandwich light brown), and made his very own self a scrambled egg and cheese tortilla. It was either a very late breakfast or an early lunch.

CO: On our way to Benton, we drove past a beautiful Good Sam park tucked away in a large stand of tall trees! We made a note of Whittington Woods RV Park on the map for any return visit to this area. While this KOA where we’re staying is in the woods, it’s also adjacent to a fairly busy highway with traffic noise.

While speaking of shudda-cudda-wudda places like the Good Sam park, we can include the Frozen Custard stand in Sesser. I’ve been telling Frank for years that there is another soft-serve ice cream besides Dairy Queen that my family always liked better. There’s an ad for it in our KOA folder, but it’s on a road north of here. Dang, I wanted to taste frozen custard again to see if I can tell a difference compared to Dairy Queen. Since we aren’t unloading Maxwell on these Hell-bent-for-leather overnights, making a run for frozen custard isn’t really practical.

End Note: It’s pouring buckets of rainwater complete with thunder and lightning as I write! It looks like we’re not getting out of here anytime soon. So much for this morning’s weather report, “light scattered showers, but no storms.”

“Catch you on the flip side.” (Quote from the movie Proof of Life)

End Combined Log

  1. Frozen custard is to me as pressed pennies are to Frank. Worth going out of my way for. Fortunately Culvers has opened here and it's just as good as what we had as kids in Wisconsin. In fact, we tried it out the first week it opened and the place was swarming with Wisconsinites and other mid-westerners.
