Captain: The KOA in Billings, Montana, our home for
tonight, claims this place is KOA #1. There are lots of trees here and the
Yellowstone River defines one side of the camp while a nice pond provides
tonight’s view from our front and side windows. Although the Yellowstone River
rolls along within easy walking distance, the camp “authorities” seem to
discourage campers from communing with it. There are warning signs not to get
too close to the fast moving current, and grassy banks with tall trees obscure most
of the shoreline. (Note: snarky launcher in use) I did find a place where I
could watch the river rushing on its way, but it was down a dirt road into a
maintenance area.

Since we arrived here, the FO has been fine tuning our
flights for the days leading up to the Fourth of July. All the galaxies we’re
visiting apparently celebrate the Fourth by taking a three- or four-day weekend
away from inter-galactic activities to drink beer, cook hotdogs over open
fires, and sleep on the cold ground in tents. Then there are those like us who
prefer the comforts of an RV, but round up grand-kids to help celebrate the
birth of a nation with firecrackers, bottle rockets and fireworks displays.
Anyway, we’re already booked to dock on specific KOA
planets for the next several days, but the Fourth is still in limbo awaiting a
call back from the docking master in Onawa, Iowa.
First Officer: We slipped away from Camper Corner in
Ennis, Montana at an early-for-us 8:30 a.m. About an hour later on our way to
Billings, we used a pullout to allow stacked-up traffic to pass and realized
that we’d never find a prettier place for breakfast. We were on the edge of the
Madison River watching fly fishermen and about 20 pelicans competing for trout.
We fired up the generator, the Captain took the kids for
a walk, and I made Frank McMuffins consisting of fried eggs, bacon, and cheese
on toasted hamburger buns with a whisper of mayo. To celebrate our genius in
selecting this amazing spot next to the Madison River, I took the photograph
below to show you the magic of the place.
