We’re spending the Fourth of July at the On-Ur-Wa
Campground in Onawa, Iowa. This campground across the road from the
fully-booked KOA was described to us as a small family-owned RV Park behind the
Dairy Queen. We didn’t expect much. To our surprise, this is one of the nicest
parks where we’ve stayed.
Grassy Lawns and Tall Old Cottonwood Trees |
The grounds are forested with many tall cottonwood trees
and the RV sites are the longest and widest we’ve ever seen. Yes, the park is rather
small, but all the sites are pull-throughs and the owners are very welcoming.
They threw a BBQ for all the campers this evening at 6 p.m. We brought our own
beverages and chairs to the very plentiful, varied and delicious feast that
included grilled chicken and brats along with deviled eggs, 5-cup salad, baked
beans, corn on the cob and a variety of homemade desserts. All of this bounty
was free! A gentleman from a nearby winery was present and offered wine tasting
as well. Class act!
We met some nice full-timers in the rig next to ours and
astonishingly the woman’s name is Cheryl Kay, and she’s originally from
Indiana! Spooky! She and her husband Dale Reese stay in Tonopah near Phoenix
during the winters, so I expect we will see them again sometime. We learned
some good information from them about the ins and outs of full-timing.
Iowa reminds me so much of my home state of Indiana. It’s
wonderful seeing the white clover in bloom all over the grassy campground. I
miss that. There are cornfields along the highway, and the corn is way more
than “knee high by the fourth of July.” It’s good to see the fields interrupted
with patches of trees to break the wind, and it makes me wistful thinking about
hunting for morel mushrooms in woods like these during my Indiana childhood.
Okay, so the Captain has a heart, she’s a bit tired, and
the FO has already turned in, so I’d best sign out before my life’s story pours
out on this page.
Cheers to the Red, White and Blue and double cheers to
the families here who didn’t bring fireworks to the campground! Contented sigh. Silence
is a golden way to celebrate the birth of our beloved country. Sparklers don't make noise! As most all the
U.S. presidents are wont to say, “Good Night and God Bless America!”
