Sometimes you win.
Yesterday we won.
It is an interesting situation that out here in the middle
of America, RV Parks are few and far between.
And those we do find are all small, family owned, not too clean and
usually full. No Good Sam or KOA parks
to speak of. So yesterday we were
searching the net looking for ANY park for the night and we stumbled upon The
Summer Wind RV Park in Meadow Bridge right on RT.64 in
West-By-God-Virginia and it definitely proved that the lyrics to John Denver’s
song “Country Roads” are incredibly accurate.
It was a little slice of heaven, a very small park with only
10 RV spots and maybe a dozen or so tent spots.
It sits on a corner of a ranch owned by a family for about forever and
managed by a fellow who lives in a Class A on the site. The park overlooks several pastures with
several different breeds of cattle. Lots
of grass, all new facilities, and clean as a whistle and neat as a pin. We feel really lucky to have found it. It almost erased the taste in our mouths
caused by our four day stay at the scruffy RV resort up in Ashland.
Tonight we are in a KOA in Richmond, Indiana. Once again we called half a dozen parks and
finally found this one a good 50 miles further west than we wanted to
drive. So today was a seven hour 330
mile day. That’s a 100 miles and two
hours more than the captain can tolerate, so we are a bit exhausted. Interestingly we have travelled from
Richmond, Virginia to Richmond, Indiana in two days.
Next Tuesday we will go north to Elkhart, Indiana to get a
new #1 air conditioner installed the following day. That will give us cool air in the front of
the rig which is a good thing because the chassis (Ford) engine air conditioner’s
blower motor has started screeching, and it is too annoying to run continually.
With the front air conditioner replaced we can run the rig’s
generator as we travel and use the house air conditioner to keep us
comfortable. It sounds complicated but
it is.

Log
Captain’s Addendum:
We have again lucked out with both this Richmond, Indiana KOA and the weather. It is
warm here, not hot, and surprisingly, it’s not humid! Hooray! Our site has a
view of the lake, and all the sites are grassy with tall trees and wonderful
shade. I walked over to their dog park, and it has a very nice bench and a
round umbrella table with benches. Of course there are also fun doggie
structures like ramps, tunnels and a fake fireplug that most KOA’s provide. All
in all, this place is top-notch.

We’re in Indiana to have the air-conditioner fixed, but it
so happens that my cousin, Marrietta Dugan (Peanut) who is 85 years old took a
turn for the worse last Tuesday. Hospice is there at her home in Kokomo, and a
few of my cousins from northern Indiana will likely be there on Sunday. Since
we’re here earlier than we planned, hopefully I’ll be able to drop by on Sunday
to see Peanut and the other cousins. Update:
I called my cousin’s house last
evening and talked with one of her caregivers, who told me Marrietta died just
about an hour before my phone call. I’m so sorry I didn’t get there in time,
and I will be anxious to know when her funeral will be.
I also have a very good friend in Kokomo, Cheryl Pyke.
Cheryl and I grew up two houses from each other, and our mothers always used our
middle names when calling us home for supper (Cheryl Kay and Cheryl Ann). Cheryl’s
husband just bought a NEW Corvette and drove to Bowling Green, Kentucky to pick
it up this past Wednesday. Several friends and family members drove down there
with him. The delivery of the car took almost the whole day complete with a
tour of the assembly plant and museum. It’s quite an event, and the customer
goes home with a video of the fanfare involved in driving away in the new
Corvette.
We’ve located a small campground in Windfall fairly close to
Kokomo for Sunday night.

Addendum.
