First Officer’s Entry: 20-15-08-06. Mission Day 73

This is Thursday.  We got up at 5 AM and left the park at 6, heading down to Kokomo.  We arrived there at 8:45 for the 9AM funeral of Cheryl’s cousin, Marietta (Peanut) Dugan.

The service was nice and Cheryl got to reconnect with a lot of relatives she hadn’t seen in ten or so years. We drove the rig to Kokomo because I really didn’t want to drive the Smart Car 100+ miles on I-31.  It’ll do it, and probably would have done it, but it seems kind of small for that type of driving.
We were back here in ElkHart at 3:00 PM.

Yesterday we spent the day visiting the RV & MH Museum where I found that “MH” doesn’t stand for “Motor Home” nor “Mobile Home.”  It stands for “Manufactured Housing.”

More photos of the RV's inside in our next photo splash

I really didn’t have high expectations for this museum.  Seriously, how interesting can a bunch of old RV’s be?  But it turned out that the museum is a) HUGE, and b) beautifully laid out, and c) full of “Oh my goodness!  Come here and look at this!”, moments.  We had a ball!

On Wednesday we went to see the Gene Stratton-Porter house/museum.  GSP is one of Cheryl’s favorite Indiana authors.  She was born in 1863 and was a prolific writer.  I naturally had never heard of her, being a Tom Clancy man.

Once again I had no (or very low) expectations of what it was going to be like, but I wanted Cheryl to see it because I subjected her to seven days of motorcycling rally and felt I owed her a day for her.  OK, once again I had a good time.

Exciting, no.  Fun, no.  Interesting, yes.  It seems that GSP was a woman far ahead of her times.  Her books made her millions, and she brooked no guff from anybody.  She also married a very rich man and stood equal to him.  She designed her own houses and supervised the construction crews.  I really enjoyed learning about her.

Gravestone of Gene and her daughter

An interesting history of the photo (right): The statue resting on the gravestone was originally placed on a Civil War general's grave. A tree fell on the statue and the right arm was broken. The statue was replaced on the general's grave and the broken statue was repaired and donated to adorn Gene and Jeanette's grave. (Cheryl)
Even during the heat of August, Gene's wildflower gardens are in bloom

This home in the woods on Sylvan Lake couldn't be more inviting. I want to live here! Cheryl

Oh, by the way.  On the “New Air Conditioner Project.”  The service manager at the RV repair shop says the A/C unit is in the shop, and we are scheduled to bring the rig there tomorrow at 8AM.  Pray all goes well.
