Playing Huckleberry Finn in Dubuque, Iowa

Captain’s Entry:
I can see the Mississippi River out the big front window of the coach!  We’re at another city park, and it’s even better than the lovely one we stayed in last night. We have a huge long RV slot so we don’t have to unhitch Maxwell. There is lush grass all around us and just down the road there is a paved hiking/bicycling trail that goes on and on and who knows how far across the city of Dubuque (Dah – Buke), Iowa.

We can see a great-looking bridge over the river and watch boats going down the river. There is a marina just across the way and wonderful benches to sit on. I’m a happy camper tonight.

We gained an hour as we drove today, so we’re again in camp by 2:00 p.m. with plenty of time to relax and enjoy this great view and walking trails. The dogs and I have been out for over an hour. I’d love to walk this trail further, but sometimes I go too far. I’m trying not to resort to calling Frank to bring Maxwell to the rescue. Besides, this trail goes off along the river where there don’t seem to be any nearby roads. I just looked up to see a bright red boat with three or four people going pell-mell down the river. This is so much fun! Can you tell I’m a water person?

There are flocks of swallows here! They zoom, soar, dive and brush past your face! They are crazed little wild birdies. I guess they’re like me and just love being by the river. We don’t have sewer or water here, but do have 50 amp electric. We’ve got water in the tank and the sewer tank was just emptied this a.m. We’re good to stay.

Hey another thing. It’s fall here! No kidding, it’s 70 degrees, and I don’t want to leave, ever!

First Officer’s Entry:
Today we drove from Marinette, Wisconsin to Dubuque, Iowa.  That’s pretty much Wisconsin top to bottom, and was 295 miles and about seven hours on the road. That was an actual seven hours today because we were not able to do our regular routine of drive an hour and stop and make breakfast at a rest stop, because there are no rest stops in Wisconsin!

We came straight down Rt. 41 and Rt. 151, drivin’ and a-looking, and drivin’ and a-looking, and never did see even ONE rest stop until we got to mile-marker #1, which is one mile inside Wisconsin and four miles from our RV Park for the night.

On top of which we drove the first half of that 295 miles in d-r-i-v-i-n-g rain with visibility down to about 200 feet, and the second half in winds gusting hard enough to help us do a couple of unplanned lane changes.

On top of that, on top of that, both RT. 41 and Rt. 151 beat us to death.  They are in need of serious remedial attention.

So couple up the rain, and the wind, and the road conditions, and the lack of rest areas, and my memories of Wisconsin are going to be less than fond.

Other than that everything is fine.  Tomorrow Iowa!
