Ship’s Log - Stardate: 2015-08-18 - Tuesday - Mission Day 86

Captain’s Entry:
Movie Mania
Yesterday we rested, cleaned, and fixed things. Today we traveled.

We drove the southern UP (Michigan’s Upper Peninsula) coast from Mackinaw City to Menominee and were rewarded with wide-open views of Lake Michigan. I never get tired of seeing small-town America and this costal road kept me entertained even in the late-morning-misty rain.

The First Officer and I were talking about all the places we’ve gone out of our way to see because movies we liked were filmed there. Since we’ve only a few photos and virtually no amazing places to report about these last two days, just for fun we thought we’d subject you to our Movie Locations Visited List.

What initially set us on this trajectory took place way back in 1985 when we got on Frank’s Harley and headed to Florence, Arizona in search of the drugstore where James Garner worked as a pharmacist in the movie Murphy’s Romance.

At that time it still said Murphy’s Drugstore on the window and the tree planted out front in the movie still grew there. The soda fountain (albeit non-working) and the interior pharmacy window also had survived. The house Sally Field inhabited in the movie was merely a façade that unfortunately had burned down at the hands of some wayward teenagers. We still have tons of photos of the store and the tree out front that make fond memories of that day, that ride, and that movie, the first in our “collection.”

Movie Locations Visited
Murphy’s Romance – Florence, Arizona
Somewhere in Time – Mackinac Island, Michigan
An Officer and a Gentleman – Port Townsend, Washington
Beaches – Crystal Cove, California
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil – Savannah, Georgia
The Goonies – Astoria, Washington
Studio 60 (TV Series) – Pahrump, Nevada
The Majestic and Outbreak – Ferndale, California
A Million Ways to Die in the West – Monument Valley, Utah

First Officer’s Entry:
Follow up on the dashboard air-conditioner blower motor:  It arrived yesterday and I installed it and it seems to be working just fine.

We are firmly ensconced in the River Park RV Park in Menominee, MI.  It is a city run park and it is adorable!  It is clean as a pin, well laid out, fully grassed, and right on the Menominee River.

As an additional benefit, it is 71 degrees cool!  We actually ran the heater in the RV as we drove here from Mackinaw City, and I am going to set the automatic thermostat on the heating system tonight just in case it dips down much lower.

CKT is sitting on the couch right now wearing a sweatshirt and sweatpants and two pairs of socks.  It is clear we have been living in Phoenix too long.

That’s it for now.  We have to figure out where we will be going tomorrow.
